The word Spartan conjures up the vivid history of the battle of Thermopylae, a story of enormous courage in the face of devastating odds. The Spartans were a tough breed, trained from childhood in the art of war and inured to most privations, both mental and physical. Engaging them at close quarters was something to be feared and avoided, as their famous Kopis swords struck off arms and legs like a scythe in a wheat field! Designed by Andrew Demko, the Cold Steel Spartan™ is a folding Kopis scaled down to accommodate the demands of a tamer, more sophisticated world. The 4 1/2" blade evokes the classic Kopis of the ancients with its characteristic recurved edge, big belly and sharp, acute point. It's hollow ground from Japanese AUS 8A stainless and has some similarities with a Kukri. Like the Kukri, the Spartan™ always presents its edge at an angle to the material being cut to produce a deep sheering effect. However, since its point is narrower and more acute than most Kukri blades, it stabs almost as well as it cuts. The Spartan™ also echoes the ancient Kopis in its handle. It's designed to help the hand resist the pull of centrifugal force and to retard forward momentum, when stabbing, or backward movement, when hammering or smashing with its pommel. Injection molded out of Grivory with steel liners for strength, it’s heavily contoured for comfort and features irregular fluting and a heavily textured surface finish for an exceptionally effective grip.

The Spartan™ has dual pocket clips to assure ambidextrous carry and for quick draw opening, it features a thumb plate that can be used to open the knife like a conventional "one handed opener" or be snagged on the edge of a pocket during the draw stroke and opened automatically. Additionally, the Spartan™ incorporates our Tri-Ad™ locking mechanism, which has proven, under torture testing to be almost impervious to stress, strain and shock. It's almost impossible to overcome and offers a huge margin of safety not found in our competitor’s folders.

As a CCW permit holder, I rarely leave my home completely unarmed. If I don't have a sidearm (and often, even if I do), this is my backup weapon of choice. As far as it being bulky (a complaint I've heard in other forums), I find that in a relaxed fit pair of jeans, it sits just fine. The blade is a little prone to rust spots if there's any contact with water, but it's nothing that a little oil and some steel wool doesn't fix. The handle fits the hand nicely, with a great grip for solid weapon retention (only thing better is my folding karambit, which I carry when I really do need a lower profile carry). This is a great knife. Not so much if you're just looking for a utility knife, but if you were looking for that, chances are you wouldn't be looking at this....

I own, and carried an old pro-lite for years, until the lock started to be iffy. I bought this knife thinking it wouldn't be too much bigger, I was wrong. This is a real pocket fighting knife. Great recurve blade (it's a Cold Steel knife what do you expect?)the handle retention is incredible, and remarkably light. It is kind of large, but not too over the one complaint are the cuts in the handle, they give excellent grip but at the pocket clip they catch and make it a little difficult to pocket. A small gripe but since it's the only one it kinda sticks out. This is a great knife.

This is the best folder out there. I echo the other reviews--it is not low-profile. This is a super-sharp, no-nonsense beast and if you are not careful, it will take your fingers or your whole hand off. The grips are phenomenal. The steel liners/spacers make it solid beyond belief. The AUS-8A steel is a top-notch product. Believe the videos--they show you what it can do--the Greek ingenuity that developed the Kopis holds true in this knife. I don't understand how they keep the price so low. I also don't understand how the competitors can offer knives that don't even approach this one in terms of quality and functionality for twice the price. I have carried this for 4 years now and every time I use it onlookers gasp in incredulity. If you aren't constricted in terms of your wardrobe (ie: have room enough in the pants you wear to carry this comfortably), this is the one to purchase.
